Mines

Over centuries a suppressing constriction and an extensive darkness have
been the main characteristics of the daily working life of the South
Tyrolean miners. They had to spend day by day deep down in the
galleries to dig for copper, silver and other valuable
metals. Only the flickering light inside the mines gave the dark
atmosphere a feeling of daylight. A different way to spend your holidays
in South Tyrol:
Nowadays, after the close-down of the last existing mines interested
visitors are moving about where in the past the miners used to work
really hard. Equipped with helmets and headlamps professional
guides take them on tours through the narrow corridors of the disused
mines.
The South Tyrolean mining museum offers fascinating insides into
the world of the miners; you can visit 5 different structures: the
miner’s world Ridanna Monteneve, the mining museum Granaio in
Cadipietra, the experimental-mine Monteneve and the
climate-mine of Predoi as well as the show-museum of Predoi.
Make sure not to miss the silver mine of Villandro which is
located at the Pfunderer Mountain – this region used to be one of
the most important mining regions of Tyrol.
